Billing

Pay as you go, through Stripe. There is no fixed fee: you pay for compute while sandboxes run and for storage while they are paused.

Subscribing

A new account has a quota of zero. To use sandboxes, add a payment method on the dashboard's Billing page, or print a Stripe Checkout link from the CLI:

Once the subscription is active, your account gets its quota (see Limits). Cards, invoices and cancelling are in Stripe's billing portal: the dashboard's Billing page, or mat billing portal. Both need a signed-in session, not an API key.

What is metered

  • Compute: seconds a sandbox is running, priced by size.
  • Storage: seconds a sandbox is paused, weighted by what it keeps on disk: its disk plus its saved memory. That is 12 GiB for small, 24 GiB for medium and 48 GiB for large, so a large paused sandbox costs more than a small one. A stopped sandbox (after a host restart or a crash) keeps no memory, so it counts its disk only: 10, 20 or 40 GiB.
  • Creation that fails is never billed. Deleted sandboxes stop counting.
  • A running sandbox whose host has not answered for 2 minutes is billed as storage, not compute.
  • Usage before your subscription starts, or after it ends, is never billed.
  • Snapshots are not billed yet.

We count usage from each sandbox's status about every 30 seconds and report it to Stripe hourly. Stripe prices it, invoices you and collects payment.

Rates

Rates are set in Stripe and are still a draft. The current draft rates are in the pricing section of the home page. They may change before launch.

past_dueA payment failed and Stripe is retrying. Everything keeps working. Update your card in the billing portal.
endedCancelled or unpaid. Your quota is zero: you cannot create or resume sandboxes until you subscribe again. Your sandboxes are kept, and for 30 days you can still download their files (mat export, or Download files in the dashboard).
offBilling is not set up on this deployment.

Billing never deletes a sandbox.
